Synthetic lubricants are made by chemically combining, in a laboratory, lower molecular weight materials to produce a finished product with planned and predictable properties. Synthetic lubricants are a combination of synthetic base oil plus thickeners and additives that will give the grease or oil lubricant a number of special properties. Most synthetic motor oils, with the exception of high end lubricants can be mixed with conventional motor oils with no adverse reaction to the oils or your engine. The great thing about synthetic lubricants, they never break down as compared to petroleum products, hence the 3,000 mile change intervals.
