Polytetrafluoroethylene
PTFE was discovered by Roy Plunkett of DuPont in 1938, while attempting to make a new CFC refrigerant, when the perfluorethylene polymerized in its storage container. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), more commonly known by its trademarked name Teflon, is a synthetic fluoropolymer which has numerous applications. A remarkably versatile polymer, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), lies at the heart of Gore's (Gortex) innovative products.
