Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are enlarged veins that can be flesh colored, dark purple or blue. They often look like cords and appear twisted and bulging. They are swollen and raised above the surface of the skin. Varicose veins are commonly found on the backs of the calves or on the inside of the leg. Varicose veins are occur when the valves in the veins that prevent the blood from flowing backwards become weak causing blood to leak back into the vein and collect there. This problem is called venous insufficiency. Pooled blood enlarges the vein and it becomes varicose. Most varicose veins are relatively benign, but severe varicosities can lead to major complications, due to the poor circulation through the affected limb. Treatments for varicose veins include exercising, losing weight, not wearing tight clothes, elevating the legs and avoiding long periods of standing or sitting. Surgical options exist too for people with severe varicose veins.
