Ulcers
An ulcer (usually called a peptic ulcer) is a sore in the lining of your stomach or duodenum (the first part of the small intestine). If peptic ulcers are found in the stomach, they're called gastric ulcers. If they're found in the duodenum, they're called duodenal ulcers. Many people get peptic ulcers but the good news is that these ulcers can be treated successfully. Peptic ulcers are caused by either a type of bacteria or by over-use of anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen. Depending on the cause of the ulcer, the treatment may vary. Neither stress nor spicy foods cause ulcers. But they can make ulcers worse. Drinking alcohol or smoking can make ulcers worse, too. Having relatives with peptic ulcers puts you at risk of having them too. Learn more about the condition of ulcers with information on causes, symptoms, history, and treatments.
