Hysterectomy

A hysterectomy is an operation to remove a woman's uterus. In some cases, the ovaries and fallopian tubes also are removed. A hysterectomy is the second most common surgery among women in the United States. One in three women in the United States will have a hysterectomy by age 60. Hysterectomies are performed on women with uterine cancer or on women with intolerable pelvic pain from endometriosis or heavy, irregular periods. A hysterectomy will often relieve troublesome symptoms from these health issues. A hysterectomy ends your ability to become pregnant. Hysterectomy is generally safe, but with any major surgery comes the risk of complications. Such complications include blood clots, infection, excessive bleeding or an adverse reaction to the anesthesia.
