Constipation
Constipation is defined as having a bowel movement fewer than three times per week. Constipation is not a disease but rather a symptom of something else. You may be constipated if you are having fewer bowel movements than usual, or if it takes a long time to pass stools, and they are hard. Constipation is one of the most common gastrointestinal complaints in the United States. Constipation affects almost everyone at one time or another. The causes of constipation may include a poor diet, not getting enough exercise, or using laxatives too often. Self-treatment of constipation with over the counter laxatives is the most common aid but often eating more fiber (fruits, vegetables, whole-grain cereal), drinking more liquids, and getting more exercise will solve the problem. Although constipation is usually harmless, it can be a sign or cause of a more serious problem.
