Secure Sockets Layer
SSL or Secure Sockets Layer are used to provide authentication and communications privacy over the Internet using an specially designed encryption protocol. Most commonly, when you browse to a secure web page, only the server is authenticated while you, the client, remain unauthenticated. When you login over the secure sockets layer, then you are properly authenticated and a secure communication can occur. SSL protocols allow client/server applications to communicate in a way designed to prevent eavesdropping, tampering, and message forgery. Research secure sockets layer packages and solutions here.
